An Evening in Her Stall

The barn is very busy tonight with riders, so Xena and I spent most of the evening in her stall. We managed to get into the arena at 9:45 for about 20 minutes, but by then it was quite cold and I was getting a bit tired. I can hardly wait for spring!

What We Did Tonight
7:50 to 10:30 p.m. = 2 hours, 40 minutes  Counting the Minutes

  • Worming Practice
This was the second time using apple sauce, and she was quite interested in lapping it from a plastic dish. I filled the large syringe with apple sauce and dipped the nozzle in molasses. Xena licked the syringe quite a bit, and a couple of times I managed to push the plunger, so she got a bit of apple sauce. We’re making headway, but I’m not sure that we’ll be ready by early March for her next worming.
  • Hair Cut
I trimmed her mane last weekend, but I hadn’t finished the edge, so at the moment it looks a bit chopped off. I spent about 20 minutes trying to give it a more natural, ragged edge. I wish I was a better barber! Finished off by rubbing MTG into her mane and tail.
  • Parallel Walking Game
Brief time in the arena practicing our Parellel Walking game. Her right side is getting much better as she no longer tries to walk sideways when I ask her to speed up. We did quite well trotting on the left as she remained calm and stayed on a straight line, parallel to me. The right side at the trot didn’t work quite so well, as she became nervous and circled me, although not quite as frantically as before.
