I went for a second visit to the natural horsemanship barn I saw last weekend. The barn owner, Susan, spent another two hours talking with me, answered my numerous questions and showed me more of the property.
As with any large decision, there are so many pros and cons to this move. We’d be downsizing from a 55 acre property with over 30 boarders, paid staff, great facilities and amenities, along with miles of public trails for hacking. In stark contrast, the new barn is a family-run farm on just 10 acres, with only a handful of boarders, limited facilities and few amenities. But still, it feels like the correct choice.
I’ve come to the conclusion, that Xena’s happiness is likely closely tied to mine. A happy, creative, motivated horse owner can only create a positive environment for the horse. I’ll probably worry about every aspect of our move, but in the end, I think she’ll handle it all in stride. Xena is far more confident today than she was a year ago, and she’s an experienced traveller — having moved all the way from Alberta to Ontario!
We’ll be moving on June 6th, only 12 days from now. It will mean paying board at two barns for the month of June, but I prefer to speed things along once a difficult decision has been made.
